Little Rock is the capital and largest city in Arkansas; in 2010 the population reached 193,524. The population for the Metropolitan Area was 717,666 in 2012. Little Rock’s name originates from a small rock formation on the south bank of the Arkansas River. Bluff Dwellers, Folsom people, and no less than five Native American tribes were the first people to occupy the city.  As early as 1541, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto recorded sites of earthwork mounds in the region.
