Advertising in Kalamazoo, MI
Originally known as Bronson, Kalamazoo was founded and named by Titus Bronson. In 1837, the name was changed to Kalamazoo, which is a Potawatomi word. The word was originally used to name the local river, meaning “the mirage or reflecting river.” It is thought that the river looked as if it was full of boiling water because of the fog. The original natives to Kalamazoo were Native Americans of Hopewell. After the Hopewell people began to decline, the Potawatomi culture dominated, living there until the European settlers descended. Kalamazoo is home to the first outdoor shopping mall in the US, which opened in 1959.
