Jackson is the capital and largest city of Mississippi at the southern border of the Mississippi Delta, near the southern portion of the Yazoo River. The city was named after Andrew Jackson, when he was a general, before he went on to become president of the US. This city’s population was 73,514 in 2010 according to the US census. It is a part of a five-county metropolitan area, which had a population of 539,057. Forbes magazine says Jackson is one of America’s 100 largest metro areas for the best “Bang For Your Buck,” ranking the city at number 3. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eudora Welty was born in Jackson in 1909. The University of Mississippi Medical Center performed the first successful lung transplant in June 1963 by Dr. James Hardy. Jackson proudly describes itself as the “City with Soul.”
