In 2010, the Harrisburg-Carlisle metropolitan area had a population of 549,850. The city played a major role within American history, specifically Westward Migration, the American Civil War, and Industrial Revolution. After building the Pennsylvania Canal and Railroad in the 19th century, Harrisburg became one of the most industrialized cities in the northeastern U.S. Harrisburg even has a U.S. Navy ship named after it, the USS Harrisburg, which served from 1918 to 1919 at the end of World War I. In 2010, Forbes magazine rated it the second-best city in the U.S. to raise a family.
