The city is the most densely populated county in Oklahoma and the metropolitan area has about 951,880 residents. Tulsa was called the “Oil Capital of the World” for the majority of the 20th century, because it played a major role as a part of the American oil industry.Although at one time, it depended on the oil industry, the city has now diversified itself with the creation of energy, finance, aviation, telecommunications, and technology jobs. In 2012, Business Week ranked Tulsa as one of the top 50 best cities in America. Although other cities claim to be the birthplace of U.S. Route 66 so does Tulsa. It is also known for its distinct Western Swing music.
