Baltimore was founded in 1729, and has many roots surrounding the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Great Baltimore Fire in 1904, and the Baltimore riot of 1968. At one time, the Inner Harbor area was the second most primary entrance for immigrants to the U.S. Beginning in the 1970’s, the city began redeveloping the area with the Maryland Science Center, Baltimore World Trade Center, and the Baltimore Convention Center. This development led into the harbor area as well in the 1980’s with Harborplace, the National Aquarium, and the Baltimore Museum of Industry. Baltimore city’s population was 621,342 in 2012 and the metropolitan area stood at 2.7 million in 2010. However, the larger Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area is estimated at 8.4 million residents. Baltimore is the 26th largest city in the country, but he largest in state of Maryland. The famous writer Edgar Allan Poe and the singer Billie Holiday are both from this city. Since Johns Hopkins Hospital and University are the city’s top employers, Baltimore is known for science, technology, engineering and math.
