As of the 2010 census, Canton is the largest area within the Canton-Massillon Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 404,422. It was founded in 1805, and quickly became a manufacturing center with its many railroads. The city diversified itself after heavy manufacturing took a decline, and is now known for education, finance, and healthcare.
